Can I get a job with a criminal record on my name?

Mistakes happen and sometimes people do things they’re not proud of. But even after you have faced the consequences for past deeds, it can still be difficult to find a job with a criminal record. The good news is that there is space for everyone under the sun so getting a job is possible.

The bad news is that your choices may be limited, but there's hope. Some employers may consider employing you, even without a MOJ check where risks are low. Some environments are stricter so if- for example, your crime was against children, don’t look for work at schools or parks where children may be present.

Search the job ads every day and see if a clear MOJ is listed as a requirement. Don’t waste time applying if it is. There are jobs where it’s not specified, so apply for as many of these as you can. And apply as soon as you can to be one of the first candidates. Statistically- the more applications you send, the better your chances of getting an interview.

If asked about your criminal history in the interview or on a form, be honest, because this doesn't mean that you will not get a job, however it may mean that you might be offered something else. If you get the job in the meanwhile, and the MOJ results arrives a week or so later, and it was found that you were not honest, you can be sure that you will be dismissed immediately, even without finishing your shift.

Don’t give up hope. Many people in your position have found jobs and turned their lives around. You still have valuable skills and knowledge to offer, so by finding the right opportunities and working hard, you can too. Make it a habit to look through job ads every single day.
