What is the difference between a Resume and Curriculum Vitae (CV)?

A resume and a Curriculum Vitae (CV) are both used to highlight your qualifications and experience when applying for a job. Although the term "Resume" is mostly used in the USA and Canada and "CV" is more commonly used in Europe and other parts of the world, there are distinctive differences regarding the document’s length, its contents and purpose.

 

Resume:

A resume is a one- to two-page concise and curated collection of your professional experience and used for job hunting in all industries. It presents key facts about your qualifications, educational background, work history and skills.


Curriculum Vitae (CV):

CV's are used to apply for academic roles or programs, grants, fellowships and research related to a master's degree such as a doctoral program or if you work as a professor or researcher at an academic institution. It contains a comprehensive overview with an an in-depth history of your professional and academic credentials, accomplishments, coursework, research, publications or presentations. A CV can contain many pages as a result.
